Summer 2002 Itinerary.

Here are the appearances of the S.S. Master summer 2002.

SS Master at the Tall ships Festival 2002

SS Master welcomed an estimated four thousand people on August 9th to 11th,2002, when the ship was a guest at the Richmond Tall Ships festival. At peak times, visitors had to wait ten minutes to board the ship. Once aboard, visitors enjoyed seeing for the first time, how SS Master preserves memories of the age of steam.

Many of the ship's guests were happy to line up for a visit down to the engine room and boiler. There, Second Engineer Doug Shaw described the machinery, and explained how for a hundred years, sailing ships had to rely on steam-powered tugs like the Master, to enter harbour against the tide or wind.

Our guests also dropped by the galley, or lingered by the steam windlass before climbing the ladder to the boat deck. In the wheelhouse, they saw the gleaming brass of the binnacle and engine room telegraph, and just behind, the cosy skipper's cabin.

The Executive and members of the SS Master Society thanks the many volunteers who helped visitors to see the ship, and the organizers of the Richmond Tall Ships festival for including a unique part of our maritime heritage in three days devoted to sail.
